The Kingfield Festival Days returns with its eclectic mix of parades, flotillas and fun this month, after a new group of organizers stepped in to prevent the three-day event from being canceled.
Near the end of May it appeared the festival, first held in 1976, might not happen this year, due to the level of participation in previous years and a lack of interest amidst organizers. Residents Emily Hatfield and Danielle Mathieu stepped in, however, and began planning the weekend's events.
"We just wanted a parade," Hatfield said Thursday with a laugh. From there the effort grew, she said, until Hatfield, Mathieu and others had reorganized all of the festival's signature events: the "Whatever Floats Your Boat" water parade, the crowning of Mrs. Kingfield, live music, carnival games and food vendors.
Admittance to everything is free, something Hatfield said was an important carry-over from previous years. They've also added new events, including a movie night in the park on Friday, July 19, a caricature artist working out of the Schoolhouse Gallery on Saturday, July 20, and G-Force Laser Tag in the town park later that evening.
As always, the festival's crowning event will be the Grand Parade on July 20 at noon. The always-creative and occasionally-outlandish parade floats will be based on the theme "Only In Maine...."
"We like to throw a great party," Hatfield said of Kingfield.
